“There are lots of things you need in terms of training.
You need to be able to work at home with your hands, learn how to play a guitar and also learn how the instruments work.”
He said some people may have to go into the music business after having a degree, while others might work as an apprentice or full-time in the commercial sector.
“A lot of people go into this career because they don’t want to work in the typical music business,” he said.
Dr O’Malley said there was a growing demand for native instrument and percussion technician jobs.
“I would say it’s probably about 50 per cent of the jobs available, maybe more, but there are a lot more available in the area, especially now because of the internet,” he explained.
Dr Chris O ‘Sullivan said you need experience in a range of fields.
“You can also be a technician if you’re a woodwind instrument technician, for example, that can be used in a lot different kinds of productions,” he advised.
“If your career is in a percussion instrument, you can also learn to play bassoons, you may need to learn how a harp works, and a lot that has to do with your skill in a bassoon.”
You can apply online or at the recruitment centre.
Dr O’Neill said if you are looking to start your career in the country, you should contact the industry recruiter.
“They will contact you to find out what your qualifications are and what sort of opportunities you’re up for in the future,” he suggested.
“It’s a really important job that you don’t get bored with, you have to keep your options open.”
